Mövenpick Resort & Spa Jimbaran Bali Joins Global Fight Against Plastic Pollution for World Environment Day

Bali, Indonesia, 8 June 2018 – Mövenpick Resort & Spa Jimbaran Bali has celebrated World Environment Day by hosting a major coastal clean-up and tree-planting event, aimed at combating plastic pollution and restoring Bali’s fragile mangrove forests.

The theme of this year’s World Environment Day is “Beat Plastic Pollution”, reflecting the crisis currently affecting the world’s oceans. Joining this global fight, Mövenpick Resort & Spa Jimbaran Bali visited a local mangrove forest in southern Bali on 7th June 2018 to remove plastic debris and plant new trees.

This CSR activity was overseen by the resort’s General Manager, Horst Walther-Jones, who was joined by members of the resort’s management team and associates. Together, they rolled up their sleeves to help revive this important coastal ecosystem.

Over the course of the morning activity, a large amount of plastic waste was collected from the forest and taken away in biodegradable non-plastic sacks. The removal of this rubbish will help protect local marine life, including fish, reptiles and sea birds, which could swallow or become entangled in the waste.

Clearing the plastic pollution will also help young mangrove trees to grow, as part of the resort’s reforestation strategy. Two hundred mangrove saplings were planted, which will eventually help to prevent shoreline erosion and allow wildlife to flourish.

“Plastic pollution is one of the greatest threats facing the world today. At Mövenpick Resort & Spa Jimbaran Bali, we understand that we have a duty to help protect and preserve the environment. Bali’s fragile coastal ecosystem is under threat and it is our duty to step up and make a difference,” commented Horst Walther-Jones.

“Our mission to restore Bali’s mangrove forest is just one part of our on-going commitment to conserve the island’s environment for future generations. I would like to thank all of our guests and team members for coming together to take part in this important activity,” he added.

As part of World Environment Day’s “Beat Plastic Pollution” theme, people and businesses around the world are being urged to take action to combat the threat of plastic. This can range from individual efforts, such as picking up plastic waste on the beach, to major initiatives to eliminate the use of non-biodegradable plastic straws, bottles, cups and cutlery.

In line with these goals, Mövenpick Resort & Spa Jimbaran Bali’s mangrove cleaning exercise did not use any plastic materials, such as water bottles or plastic bags.

This activity formed part of SHINE, the global sustainability programme from Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts, which aims to positively impact the environment and local communities. This strategy is divided into three key pillars, Environment, Employer and Social Sustainability, with a key focus on education.

As a result of this commitment, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has been named the world’s most sustainable hotel group for two consecutive years by environmental certification body Green Globe.
