November 29, 2017 – dtac takes a step to the next level of telecommunication technology by introducing cutting-edge cell sites that are specifically designed to fit the surrounding environment in both city and remote areas. The implementation of innovative cell sites aims to meet the modern lifestyle and achieve dtac’s 4G/3G expansion plan across Thailand, especially in high-density areas, to enhance online and mobile experience and support new and upcoming technologies.
Since the invention of mobile phones in 1973, we have seen an evolution from the first-generation heavy and bulky mobile phones to the current generation of smartphones with large screen, no home button, fingerprint and facial scans, and more computing power to support various types of usage. There are over 3 million mobile applications available for download today.
People may not notice that cell site technology has significantly evolved as well. dtac is the first mobile operator in Thailand to deploy new generation of cell sites to extend network coverage and improve the quality of life through enhanced digital services.
The first generation of analog cell sites built in Thailand almost 30 years ago were known as macro base station with very tall towers, 60-80 meters high, to transmit mobile signal to the coverage area. Those early cell towers only supported voice transmission.
Entering the 3G and 4G eras, data traffic has outgrown voice traffic. The density of cell sites is now as equally important as the coverage itself. Cell towers have become smaller in size, in the range of 30, 36, 42, and 45 meters tall, focusing on data transmission for mobile Internet access in high-density areas.
In city areas, small cell towers are built at a height of 12, 15, or 18 meters to improve signal density to support mobile Internet and data services to meet the always-on lifestyle in today’s digital era.

dtac has several cell site concepts to serve the needs of each particular area.
Tree Pole – Tree pole is designed to fit well with surrounding environment, including parks, forests, or natural attractions. It provides signal for all frequencies to the surrounding communities without destroying the natural scenery.
Zero Site – Zero Site is one of the most advanced cell site technologies deployed in cities to meet growing digital demand in increasingly dense areas and improve the quality of life of people in the areas. It is equipped with LED lamp to ensure safety to community and people during night time. The cell site with LED lamp can offer the bright light while saving electricity by 50-80%
City Site – City Site is designed to fit with the city environment and equipped with interactive screen that can be used as advertising billboard to air advertising spots. It can also be equipped with LED screen that provides various information that will be beneficial to the city people, such as real-time weather report etc.
Mono Pole – Mono Pole cell sites are smaller than traditional cell sites and designed to fit well with the surrounding environment. Camouflaged towers can be painted green to blend with the natural landscape.
