Phuket Marriott Resort and Spa, Nai Yang Beach Reflects on Highly Successful and Sustainable Year

Phuket, Thailand, December 18th, 2018 – Phuket Marriott Resort and Spa, Nai Yang Beach continued to give back to its idyllic home destination in 2018, with a series of valuable CSR initiatives that have helped to preserve Phuket’s pristine environment and engage with the local community.

Through Marriott International’s “Serve360 – Doing Good in Every Direction” global pledge, the company is committed to being a force for good and creating a positive and sustainable impact wherever it does business. In Phuket, this has included a long list of highly worthwhile projects that have helped improve the lives of local people and conserve the island’s fragile ecosystems.

A Mangrove Planting Project has helped reforest part of Phang Nga province, neighboring Phuket. In four separate sessions, associates from Phuket Marriott Resort and Spa, Nai Yang Beach helped to plant an incredible 24,000 mangrove saplings across 34 rai (5.4 hectares) of coastal land in Tab Pla village. This conservation project was coordinated in partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The resort has also helped to educate local schoolchildren about the important issue of road safety through its Helmet Painting Project. Associates traveled to three Phuket schools and provided students with a total of 296 motorcycle helmets, which they helped to paint with colorful designs. With a significant number of Thai children still traveling to school on motorbikes with no helmets, it is hoped that this initiative will help to save young lives.

Continuing the theme of helping Phuket’s youth, Marriott’s hotels in Phuket joined forces with Yaowawit School in Phang Nga province to host a Hospitality Skills Project. The aim of this initiative was to educate students about the different career paths available to them and to teach them practical skills. Various courses are taught, including housekeeping, kitchen, hotel operations and more.

Plastic pollution is widely recognized as a major global problem, but Marriott is taking affirmativeaction to reduce plastic waste. Phuket Marriott Resort and Spa, Nai Yang Beach has launched a Less Plastic Waste campaign to eliminate plastic bags and drinking straws, and its associates have started undertaking weekly beach cleaning exercises. In addition, Khun Niphon Phongsuwan, a specialist in Marine & Coastal Ecosystem Research, has visited the resort to educate associates and guests about the environmental importance of Nai Yang Beach and Sirinat National Park, and the challenges faced by local flora and fauna.

Finally, the resort has partnered with Thanyapura Health & Sports Resort in Phuket in support of local sporting events. Recognizing the importance of health and wellness in the local community, the resort is sponsoring major local events like the King of The Mountain races, cycling events, triathlons and more, including providing prizes to the winning athletes. Each of Thanyapura’s events in 2018 has attracted more than 300 participants, and Marriott encourages its own associates to take part.

“At Phuket Marriott Resort and Spa, Nai Yang Beach, we understand that sustainability is not just a buzzword – it is a way of life. Our entire team is dedicated to serving our community, including preserving the environment and improving the lives of local people. 2018 has been an extremely productive year for our CSR projects, but this is only the beginning; we will continue to work with like-minded partners to implement more valuable initiatives for the benefit of our guests, associates and the entire Phuket community,” commented Francois Poletti, Director of Operation, Phuket Marriott Resort and Spa, Nai Yang Beach.
